The original VW diesel engine was a 1.5-liter that had been adapted from the gasoline version with eight valves and a single overhead cam, and its displacement was increased to 1.6 liters in 1981The Bosch diesel injection pumps used by VW in their ALH TDI engines have a fuel shutoff solenoid (N109) which is supposed to cut off fuel to the engine. The engine has been setting a DTC 17946 - Fuel Shutoff Solenoid (N109) P1538 - 35-10 - Open or Short to Ground - Intermittent
The only good things about the PD engines were the reliability and fuel economy. The diesel clatter was awful.
